Accessibility
Everyone who wants to learn should be able to use PlainFinch. Here is what works today, the keyboard shortcuts, and where the site still falls short.
Last updated 7 October 2026
What is in place
Keyboard first
Every control can be reached and used with the keyboard, in a sensible order, with a visible focus outline.
Screen readers
Pages use landmarks and a clear heading order. Results, hints and messages are announced as they change.
Described diagrams
Every lesson diagram has a full text description, plus a caption saying what to notice.
Contrast and dark mode
Text and controls are designed for strong contrast, and the site follows your device's light or dark setting.
Reduced motion
Animations are reduced when your device asks for less motion.
Phones and zoom
Every page works on small screens and when zoomed in, without sideways scrolling of the page.
Keyboard shortcuts
| Keys | What they do |
|---|---|
| Ctrl + Enter (Cmd + Enter on a Mac) | Check my work, from the editor |
| Tab in an editor | Inserts two spaces of indentation |
| ↑ and ↓ in the Git terminal | Step through the commands you typed |
| Ctrl + Enter in the AI lessons' request box | Sends your request |
| Esc | Closes the quick tour |
Because Tab indents inside an editor, use Shift + Tab to move focus out of it.
Known limits
- The code editors are plain text boxes with colour highlighting drawn behind them. They work with screen readers, and the colours never carry meaning you could miss.
- On a phone, wide diagrams scroll sideways inside their own frame so the text stays readable.
- Live previews show pages written in the lessons, which are sometimes broken on purpose for Break It challenges.
- Some older lessons may still have small issues. Each report helps find them.
